Emergency Services:
St. David's ER - Provided one staff member with an 88% discount!

Hospital:
MD Anderson - They will always ask for payment upfront and only give a 10% discount if the total cost is over $50,000. Sometimes it helps getting the doctor involved because they have more pull with the facilities. If you need to go to MD Anderson and you bill will be over $1,000, you can call CHM's member advocate department and they will do their best to negotiate with MD Anderson.
Dell Children's - (part of the Seton Healthcare Network) - Offers a 14% discount for private pay patients. They will provide an "Itemized Bill" but it does not have the CPT codes. Instead, it has "Charge Codes"...these are sufficient for a filing a claim with CHM.

Labs:
Clinical Pathology Laboratories - CPL has a great program called the "TUP" program in which they provide big discounts...but they will NOT provide an itemized receipt if they put you in this program. You know that getting an itemized bill is MORE IMPORTANT than getting a great discount...So, what do you do?
Upfront, before getting services done, and with confidence, communicate clearly that you are a cash pay patient, but that you do REQUIRE an itemized receipt for services provided.
It can be super helpful to show the CPL member THIS STATEMENT and let them know that you need to receive a statement that looks just like this one before you leave today!
Let them know that, for you, an itemized receipt is MORE IMPORTANT than a big discount.
Ask if there are any discounts they can give you while still giving you an itemized receipt. (Usually they will give you a 20-25% discount and give you an itemized receipt...this is great!)
They may look at you funny because they don't understand why you would give up a big discount just to get an itemized statement. That is ok. They don't need to know why you are asking for the statement!
